Woven Leather
How it is made, and why it lasts
Few materials reveal the hand of the maker as clearly as woven leather. Look closely and you can follow every strip as it passes over and under the next, row after row.
Woven leather is the signature of Souliers Martinez. This guide explains how hand-woven leather shoes are made, why they are so comfortable, how they age, and how to choose your first pair.

What is woven leather?
Woven leather is made from thin strips of leather interlaced by hand, in the same way a basket or a cane chair is woven. The strips are cut from a full hide, then crossed at right angles or on the diagonal to create a supple, open surface.
Unlike printed or embossed leather, which only imitates a texture, woven leather is a construction: the pattern you see is the structure of the shoe itself.
The technique has deep roots around the Mediterranean, where weaving leather, straw and cane has been part of everyday craft for centuries. Our woven styles are hand-woven by artisans with traditional know-how, then made into shoes in family-run workshops in Spain and Portugal.
How it is made
Cutting
The leather must be soft enough to bend around itself without cracking, yet dense enough to keep its shape. It is cut into strips of an even width so that the weave stays regular. Our leathers come from tanneries certified Gold by the Leather Working Group.
Weaving
The strips are interlaced one by one. A basket weave gives a graphic, chequered look; an open, diagonal weave recalls the cane of a Viennese chair. Tension must stay constant from the first row to the last.
Lasting
The woven leather is shaped over a last, the form that gives the shoe its volume. Our lasts are developed exclusively for the brand with Italian last makers, so that the upper follows the foot without pinching.
Comfort and durability
A woven upper adapts to your foot. The strips move slightly against one another, so the shoe flexes with each step and gradually takes your shape. It breathes, as the weave lets air circulate, and it is light, because it uses less material than a solid upper.
Like any quality leather shoe, a woven pair needs a few wears to settle; after that, it feels made for you. A well-made woven shoe is a long-term piece: the weave spreads tension across many strips, which helps the shoe keep its shape, and the leather develops a patina over time. It ages rather than wears out.
Caring for woven leather
Store your shoes in their dust bags, away from direct sunlight, with shoe trees in boots. Remove dust with a soft brush that follows the direction of the weave.
Nourish the leather from time to time with a neutral cream applied sparingly. If your shoes get wet, let them dry naturally, away from any radiator, and avoid harsh products.
Choosing your first pair
For a statement, fully woven knee-high boots such as Roberta and Utah are the most striking expression of the technique.
For every day, the Colorado ankle boots and the Samia pumps bring texture to a simple outfit.
In summer, the Cuenca pumps, in leather woven like cane, the best-selling Léa sandals and the Paris ballerinas are the natural entry points. For weddings, our hand-woven styles in white, cream and gold suit brides and guests alike.

Questions
Is woven leather real leather?
Yes. It is made of genuine leather strips interlaced by hand, not embossed leather or a synthetic material printed with a woven pattern.
Are woven leather shoes comfortable for walking?
Yes. The weave flexes with the foot and lets air circulate, which makes woven shoes comfortable for long days in the city once they have been worn in.
Do woven leather shoes stretch?
They soften and adapt slightly to the foot, but do not stretch a full size. Souliers Martinez shoes fit true to size; if you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
Can you wear woven leather shoes in winter?
Woven boots can be worn in autumn and winter in dry weather. Open styles such as sandals and pumps are best from spring to early autumn.
How do you clean woven leather shoes?
Brush off dust with a soft brush, following the weave, and apply a little neutral leather cream from time to time.
